Namdong-gu in Incheon to Create School Route Using School Grounds... First Case in Incheon

For the first time in Incheon, a school route will be created using the grounds of an elementary school.

On July 2, Namdong-gu, Incheon, announced that it had recently signed an agreement with the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education and Yaksan Elementary School for the "Yaksan Elementary School Route Construction Project." This project aims to address the issues of the narrow and dangerous school route by creating a safe pedestrian space, with completion targeted for August.

According to the district, Yaksan Elementary School, which has 587 students, has long faced concerns over student safety accidents and traffic inconvenience due to illegally parked vehicles and utility poles installed along the narrow road.

In response, the district has held ongoing consultations with the Office of Education and Yaksan Elementary School, and has organized briefing sessions for parents and local residents to gather feedback on the construction of the school route.

The main points of the agreement include the creation of a safe school route within the Yaksan Elementary School child protection zone, permission to use school grounds and approval for pedestrian path construction, ensuring the safety of students and residents, and minimizing the impact on the school’s educational environment.

The district explained that this project is the first case in Incheon where a pedestrian school route is being established on elementary school grounds.

The district plans to use the school grounds to secure a 1.5-meter-wide pedestrian path and install safety fences, creating a school route where children and parents can travel with peace of mind.

Namdong-gu Mayor Park Jonghyo stated, "It is very meaningful that, through this agreement, we are able to create a walking environment where children can travel to and from school safely," and added, "We will continue to prioritize children's safety in our efforts to improve the pedestrian environment."
