The Chungnam Provincial Election Commission announced on July 1 that it has reported a local government official to the police on suspicion of conducting electioneering in favor of a specific candidate in connection with the 21st presidential election.
According to the Election Commission, the official, referred to as A, is accused of posting a YouTube video containing content either supporting or opposing a particular candidate on the internal bulletin board of the work portal used by public officials during the early voting period on May 30.
An official from the Chungnam Election Commission stated, "Involvement of public officials in elections is an act that seriously undermines the freedom and fairness of elections," and emphasized, "Strict measures are necessary to establish a sound election culture."
The Public Official Election Act strictly prohibits electioneering by public officials. Violations are punishable by imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 6 million won.
