"An Open Cultural Space for Communication with Residents"
The exterior wall of the Mapo District Office has been transformed into a giant screen. On June 30, 2025, Mapo District in Seoul announced that it has installed a large-scale "Media Canvas" on the outer wall of the district office building, expanding the concept of the space into an "Open Video Plaza" where all residents can enjoy culture and communicate, and thus creating a new cultural venue.

Mapo District stated, "This is more than simply installing a screen; it is the first step in returning the plaza in front of the district office to the residents as the 'Mapo Residents' Plaza.'"
The newly installed Media Canvas is approximately 635 inches in size (14 meters wide and 8 meters high), and is a state-of-the-art digital display capable of broadcasting high-definition video. During regular times, it will provide useful information to residents, such as district news and daily life updates. On special occasions, the district office plaza will be transformed into a movie theater or cheering section.
Plans are in place to screen a variety of video content, including outdoor movies and live broadcasts of sports events such as the World Cup and the Olympics. The space will be utilized as an open video cultural venue where any resident can enjoy and participate.
As the first event utilizing the Media Canvas, Mapo District will host a free outdoor movie screening, "2025 Midsummer Night Movie Plaza," at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in the district office plaza. The featured film will be "Victory," released in 2024, and advance registration has already closed due to high demand. On the day of the event, a limited number of on-site admissions will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, if it rains, the event will be postponed.
The Media Canvas will operate daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., broadcasting a variety of content every 30 minutes, including policy information, district news, and videos featuring resident participation. The broadcast content will primarily consist of images and videos, and no external audio will be played.
Additionally, the district will operate the video message project "Cheering for Our Happiness," in which any resident can participate. This program invites residents to send congratulatory or encouraging messages to family, friends, or pets, and is expected to become another platform for residents to share touching stories and experiences from their daily lives.
Park Kangsu, Mayor of Mapo District, said, "I hope the district office will become more than just an administrative institution and transform into an open space where residents can communicate and enjoy culture together. We will continue to operate the Media Canvas vibrantly with a variety of content, including films and sports broadcasts."
