Paju Yeonpung District 'Living Conditions Improvement Project' Recently Completed

The Urban Vulnerable Area Living Conditions Improvement Project in the Yeonpung District of Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, was recently completed.

The Urban Vulnerable Area Living Conditions Improvement Project is a nationally supported initiative (such as those selected by the National Balanced Development Committee) aimed at improving the physical safety and living environment of local communities. The Yeonpung District in Paju City thrived during the 1960s and 1970s when U.S. forces were stationed in the area, but lost its urban functions as the local economy declined due to environmental changes, including the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Korea.

This project was carried out under the theme "[Yeonpung-ri] Once Again, a Prosperous Village," with a focus on improving residents' living conditions. The project prioritized creating a safer environment by repairing roads that posed pedestrian hazards and demolishing abandoned and vacant houses that had become eyesores in the village to create community rest areas.

In addition, efforts were made to reduce the burden on residents by expanding home repair support through a public-private partnership-based program for supporting the renovation of old houses.

Kim Tae-su, Director of Urban Regeneration at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The Urban Vulnerable Area Living Conditions Improvement Project in the Yeonpung District of Paju City has brought about changes that residents can truly feel, going beyond simple physical improvements through community participation. We will continue to actively support the residents of the province so that they can enjoy safe and happy lives."
