LG Uplus to Notify Users via KakaoTalk When Malicious Apps Are Detected on Smartphones

On June 29, LG Uplus announced that it will launch the industry’s first “Malicious App Infection Notification Service,” which alerts users via KakaoTalk when a malicious application is installed on their smartphone, warning them of voice phishing and smishing risks.

Starting June 30, LG Uplus will send notification messages to subscribers identified as having installed malicious apps through its official account, “LG Uplus Malicious App Alert.” Customers who receive this notification should check whether they have suffered any financial damage. If damage has occurred, they must report it to the police using another person’s mobile phone. Even if there is no damage, they should visit the nearest police station or LG Uplus store as quickly as possible. This is necessary because voice phishing criminal organizations may still be in the preparation stage, making it essential to detect and remove the malicious app.

Malicious apps are mainly spread through malicious URLs or app installations that impersonate public institutions or companies. These apps take control of the mobile device and are used to steal calls, messages, and other data for criminal purposes.

LG Uplus monitors malicious URLs and apps around the clock through its “Customer Damage Prevention Analysis System,” blocking access as needed. Data related to malicious apps is provided to the police, where it is used for crime prevention and investigations.

Hong Kwanhee, head of the LG Uplus Information Security Center (CISO, CPO, Executive Vice President), said, “We will do our utmost to implement the best possible measures to protect our customers and establish ourselves as the most security-focused telecommunications company.”
