In downtown Busan, a suspected drunk driver in a sport utility vehicle (SUV) caused a hit-and-run accident, fled the scene, and triggered a series of collisions that left seven people injured.
On June 28, the Busan Gangseo Police Station announced that it had applied for an arrest warrant for a man in his 30s, identified as A, on charges of causing injury while fleeing the scene under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
According to police, at around 11:30 p.m. the previous night, A was driving his SUV near the entrance intersection of Sinhang in Songjeong-dong, Gangseo District, when he rear-ended the car in front of him and then fled. During his escape, he collided with two additional passenger cars in succession. He then crossed the center line and came to a stop after a head-on collision with an oncoming taxi. This final crash occurred about 2 kilometers from the site of the initial accident.
A total of four vehicles were damaged in the incidents, and seven people?including drivers and passengers?were injured. According to police, there were no reports of serious injuries.
A, when confronted by officers at the scene, refused to take a breathalyzer test. The police proceeded to collect a blood sample from A to determine his blood alcohol concentration and applied for a search and seizure warrant. Police have secured dashcam footage from the vehicles involved and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accidents.
