The city has been selected for the Gyeonggi The Dream Urban Regeneration Project for three consecutive years: ▲“Heungseondong - Entering Kyungmin University Square and Shopping Street” in 2023, ▲“Uijeongbudong - The Start of Rich Regional Value with a New Flow in the Old Downtown Commercial District” in 2024, and ▲“Howondong - Finding a Healthy Urban Rhythm, Walking and Staying on Mangwollo” in 2025.

Up to last year, 18 projects in 15 cities and counties had been selected for the Gyeonggi The Dream Urban Regeneration Project. In particular, “Entering Kyungmin University Square and Shopping Street,” selected in 2023, was the first completed area of the project and is recognized as a representative success story of urban regeneration achieved through cooperation among the public sector, private sector, and academia.

This year’s selected project site is located at 119-11 Howondong and its surrounding area. By utilizing the area’s latent natural resources, the city aimed to strengthen its role as a gateway for health culture. The city established the development plan in April and achieved final selection in June.

The city plans to invest a total of 1.25 billion won (50% provincial funds, 50% city funds) in this project and, over three years from 2026 to 2028, will implement four initiatives: ▲operation of a wellness hub space, ▲activation of the Mangwollo sports crew, ▲creation of a health-friendly Mangwollo, and ▲operation of an open campus.

Mayor Kim Donggeun said, “By aligning with Uijeongbu City’s walking culture trend, we will use this project to raise awareness of Howondong and restore vibrant local energy based on its unique identity.”
