Korea Housing Association Signs MOU with LH to Promote Modular Housing

The Korea Housing Association announced on the 26th that it has signed a mutual Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) to promote the adoption of modular housing.

Modular housing refers to homes that are more than 70% pre-fabricated in factories and then assembled on site. This method is effective in addressing labor shortages at construction sites, reducing carbon emissions and waste, and shortening construction periods.

With this agreement, the association plans to collaborate with LH to encourage private sector participation in modular housing and to pursue practical policy proposals. Specifically, the two organizations agreed to cooperate in the following areas: holding seminars to improve systems and raise awareness about modular housing; developing standardized designs and high-rise construction technologies; improving quality, including reducing inter-floor noise; and sharing human and material resources.

Kim Jaesik, Executive Vice President of the Korea Housing Association, stated, "Despite the various advantages of modular housing, such as shorter construction periods, the lack of institutional support and high construction costs have resulted in low business viability, making the sector reliant on public procurement. With this MOU, we expect that continued cooperation between LH, as a public procurement agency, and the Korea Housing Association, representing private housing developers, will help revitalize the modular housing industry."
