On June 26, Icheon City signed a consignment agreement with Korea Water Resources Corporation to promote the maintenance project for aging water supply pipelines. The agreement ceremony was held as a joint event involving three cities and counties: Icheon City, Gapyeong County, and Donghae City in Gangwon Province.
Through this agreement, the city plans to invest a total of 34.4 billion won to renovate 49 kilometers of old water supply pipelines by 2030, and to conduct leak detection and repair work with the goal of achieving a water supply rate of at least 85%. The water supply rate refers to the percentage of supplied water for which charges can be levied out of the total amount supplied.
The areas targeted for pipeline maintenance are Dong districts and the Bubal-eup and Baeksa-myeon areas, where pipelines are particularly old and the water supply rate is low. The city expects that, upon completion of the project, it will be able to reduce annual water fees by 1.8 billion won through lower water production costs.
Even after the maintenance project is completed, the city plans to secure a budget for the next 10 years to implement post-management measures that reflect the Ministry of Environment's action plan. In addition, it intends to reinvest the cost savings achieved through more efficient operation, management, and water supply rate improvements into further upgrades and maintenance of aging water supply facilities.
Kim Gyeonghee, Mayor of Icheon City, stated, "Renovating aging water supply pipelines is an essential project to prevent economic losses caused by leaks and to provide citizens with clean and safe tap water," adding, "Along with the prompt renovation of the pipelines, we will establish an efficient management system to provide a water supply service that citizens can trust."
