Former Head of Open Sympathy TV Fined for Defamation
YouTuber Fined 7 Million Won for Spreading False Information About Lee Youngae
Actor Lee Youngae has been awarded a summary fine of 7 million won against a YouTuber who claimed that she was linked to former President Yoon Sukyeol's wife, Kim Keonhee.
On the 25th, Judge Kim Kyungsoo of the Uijeongbu District Court, Criminal Division 21, issued a summary order of a 7 million won fine to Jung Cheonsu, former head of the YouTube channel Open Sympathy TV, who was summarily indicted on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act.
The Criminal Division of the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office summarily indicted Jung on these charges in March. A summary indictment is a procedure in which the prosecution requests the court to impose a fine or penalty through a written review, without a formal trial.
In September 2023, Open Sympathy TV reported that Lee Youngae's donation of 50 million won to the Syngman Rhee Presidential Memorial Foundation for the construction of the Syngman Rhee Presidential Memorial Hall was allegedly linked to President Yoon and his wife. Lee Youngae's side filed a complaint against Jung at Yongsan Police Station in Seoul, stating that this was false information.
The case was transferred to Yangju Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, where a decision was made not to refer the case for prosecution. However, following an objection from Lee Youngae's side, the case was forwarded to the prosecution.
When the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office decided not to indict in June last year, Lee Youngae's side appealed again. The higher authority, the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office, ordered a reinvestigation in August of the same year and directly investigated the case.
