Recognized for Efforts to Reduce Carbon Emissions
On June 24, Eunpyeong District in Seoul announced that it has become the first among Seoul’s autonomous districts to receive the “Low Carbon Excellence Institution” certification from the Urban Regeneration Safety Association. The “Low Carbon Excellence Institution” program is a system in which the Urban Regeneration Safety Association, a non-profit organization, comprehensively evaluates the carbon reduction efforts and ESG management activities of corporations and public institutions.

Eunpyeong District has been spreading a culture of low-carbon practices through the “Gamtan Action” project, a resident-led climate action initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions. In addition, the “Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa” project, a recycling program in which a cumulative total of 1.11 million residents have participated, achieved a collection volume of 1,951 tons. As a result, the district has been recognized as a leading autonomous district in carbon neutrality policies involving residents.
In particular, the district’s establishment of the Eunpyeong Metropolitan Resource Circulation Center and implementation of the “Environmental Big Deal” (mutual exchange and processing of waste) have drawn attention as an innovative model of collaborative governance that reduces redundant investments and saves budget.
Kim Mikyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong District, stated, “We will continue to expand sustainable carbon-neutral policies in cooperation with residents,” and added, “We aim to build a carbon-neutral community that solves local environmental issues together with our citizens.”
