Teacher in Incheon Allegedly Smoked During Online Class
Education Office Launches Investigation After Complaint
Education authorities have launched an investigation after a complaint was filed alleging that a teacher at a school in Incheon smoked during an online class.
On June 22, the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced that it had received a complaint on June 18, stating that Teacher A smoked an electronic cigarette while conducting an online class for high school students.
The Office of Education conducted an on-site inspection at the school to verify the facts regarding Teacher A. During the investigation, Teacher A reportedly stated that they instructed students to study individually, covered the camera, and then smoked an electronic cigarette, but that part of the act was inadvertently exposed. At the time, 24 students were attending the class.
It has been confirmed that the principal of the school issued a warning to Teacher A. An official from the Office of Education stated, "We are working to determine the specific facts," and added, "Depending on the results of the investigation, we will consider additional measures against Teacher A."
The school, which opened in 2023, currently offers online classes for subjects that are difficult for individual schools to provide, in order to guarantee students' right to choose subjects under the high school credit system, which was fully implemented for first-year high school students this year. Meanwhile, all metropolitan and provincial offices of education fundamentally prohibit smoking on school premises. For staff members, smoking is only permitted in extremely limited designated areas.
