Systematic Postpartum Care Center System Plays a Key Role
The population growth and rising newborn birthrate in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, are drawing attention. While most cities and counties in South Jeolla are experiencing a decline in the number of births, Suncheon recorded 1,452 newborns in 2024, ranking first in the province and maintaining its status as a 'leading city for childbirth' for six consecutive years.
This achievement is largely attributed to a systematic postpartum care center system. Suncheon City has consistently strengthened its collaboration with private postpartum care centers while also expanding public facilities. In fact, satisfaction with public postpartum care centers has reached 94.5%.
To boost the local birthrate, Suncheon operates detailed programs led by the Child Welfare Division, supporting mothers from pregnancy through postpartum so they can raise their children comfortably and with peace of mind.
A mother who used the Motherhill Postpartum Care Center said, "I was very anxious because it was my first childbirth, but I was most impressed by the useful educational programs, the recovery support for mothers, and especially the crucial newborn care." She added that she chose the center based on recommendations and found it trustworthy.
The Babyplus store in Haeryong-myeon offers exclusive discounts and product curation services for customers of Motherhill. Personalized consultations are also available, helping mothers prepare 'what is most needed,' from essential items before childbirth to baby products required after leaving the care center.
A city official stated, "Motherhill Postpartum Care Center and Babyplus are building a system that connects mothers' lives before and after childbirth, fosters a relationship of trust during pregnancy, childbirth, and early childcare, reduces the burden of childbirth, and supports a stable transition to daily life." The official added, "This kind of organic cooperation is laying the groundwork for Suncheon to evolve from a 'city where it is okay to have children' to a 'city that is great for giving birth and raising children.'"
