Siheung City Conducts On-Site Inspection of US Bio Clusters

Visits to New York, New Jersey, and Boston to Study Operational Structures and Support Facilities
Participation in 'BIO USA 2025' to Build Networks with Bio Companies

Siheung City in Gyeonggi Province announced on June 23 that, in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the Gyeonggi Siheung Bio Specialized Complex, it conducted a ten-day on-site inspection of major local bio clusters in New York, New Jersey, and Boston, USA, from June 12 to 21.

Together with Seoul National University Siheung Campus, Siheung Industry Promotion Agency, and Siheung Urban Corporation, the city visited advanced bio cluster sites such as the New York Genome Center and JLABS. During these visits, the delegation investigated operational structures, site selection criteria, and support facility composition plans. The city plans to use the findings from this inspection as core data for establishing the strategy for the development of the Siheung Bio Complex.

In particular, during the visit, the city participated in 'BIO USA 2025' held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, where it introduced the Siheung Bio Specialized Complex and established networks with global pharmaceutical and bio companies as well as investment institutions.

On June 19, the delegation visited Rutgers University in New Jersey and attended the 'Korea-US Biohealth Global Cooperation Symposium,' which was co-hosted by Rutgers University, Seoul National University, and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), thereby strengthening the foundation for collaboration with overseas researchers and experts.

During this period, the Siheung Industry Promotion Agency also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korean-American Society in Bio (K-BioX), focusing on establishing practical cooperation models for global startup support, overseas expansion, and connecting startup ecosystems, all aimed at fostering the bio industry in Siheung City.

The city plans to expand exchanges with domestic and international organizations such as KOTRA, build a private sector-led investment attraction base, actively attract foreign companies wishing to move into the Gyeonggi Siheung Bio Specialized Complex, and create startup infrastructure. In addition, based on global operational cases and exchange networks, the city aims to establish an AI-bio convergence ecosystem that connects talent development, clinical-research linkage, global company attraction, and the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and medical data.

The city envisions transforming into a bio-innovation hub that integrates the functions of research and development (R&D), production, and clinical trials, centering on Baegot District and linking with Jeongwang, Wolgot, and Siheung Smart Hub.

A city official stated, "Based on the networks and models secured through this inspection, we will accelerate the creation of an AI-bio convergence ecosystem that encompasses attracting investment in bio companies, nurturing talent, and building a startup ecosystem."
