At the Taihan Electric Wire Dangjin Plant in Dangjin, Chungnam, a subcontracted worker in his 40s, identified as Mr. A, was killed after being crushed by a steel structure at 10:37 a.m. on June 20, 2025.
According to Taihan Electric Wire and the police, Mr. A was performing cleaning work to complete the installation of electrical equipment when the wire of a crane lifting a steel workbench snapped, resulting in the accident.
Mr. A had been responsible for manufacturing the equipment for the past two weeks, and June 20 was his last scheduled workday. At the time of the accident, he was working with two colleagues, but was unable to escape when the structure suddenly fell.
The police are questioning witnesses and company officials to determine the cause of the snapped wire and whether safety management obligations were fulfilled.
The Cheonan branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor issued a stop-work order for the process immediately after the accident. After completing the on-site investigation, authorities plan to investigate both the primary contractor and the subcontractor for violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
The Taihan Electric Wire Dangjin Plant is subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. In the Chungnam region, there have been continued criticisms regarding inadequate safety measures for subcontracted workers, especially after a secondary subcontracted worker was killed in a machinery accident at the Taean Thermal Power Plant on June 2, 2025.
