The city explained that it was awarded this honor for its efforts to improve systems for supporting small business owners and for providing practical, field-oriented support.
Previously, in 2019, the city enacted the 'Ordinance on Supporting Small Business Owners.' The following year, Gwangmyeong became the first city, county, or district in Gyeonggi Province to establish a 'Self-Employed Support Center.' Last year, the city also revised the 'Ordinance on Coexistence and Revitalization of Local Commercial Districts,' easing the requirements for designating alley-type shopping districts.
As part of its alley commercial district community project, the city is supporting 20 communities organized by merchant associations, providing assistance for joint marketing, local festivals, and autonomous projects. The city is also actively working on renovating aging shopping centers and infrastructure.
In addition, the city stated that it is consistently implementing a variety of support programs for small business owners, including: special guarantee programs, support for public delivery apps, distribution of smart stores, the Yellow Umbrella Mutual Aid Fund, management consulting, capacity-building education, the Gwangmyeong Sale Festa, support for specialized streets, operation of a youth support group, and social contribution projects.
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, said, "Small business owners are like the capillaries of the local economy," and added, "We will continue to implement practical support measures for small business owners that can be truly felt in the field."
