The family of the victim in the Seoul Gangnam Station medical student murder case has filed a police complaint against the perpetrator on charges of corpse mutilation.
The Seocho Police Station in Seoul announced on June 20 that it had received a complaint from the victim's father that morning, accusing Choi (age 26) of mutilating a corpse.
After submitting the complaint, the victim's father stated at a press conference, "Choi confessed to mutilating the body during the initial stage of the investigation, but after retaining a lawyer, changed his statement. The prosecution accepted this revised statement and did not indict him on charges of corpse mutilation."
He added, "After stabbing the victim's carotid artery dozens of times with a weapon and killing her, Choi changed his shirt and then attacked the victim's neck and face again."
He continued, "The act of attacking the already deceased victim's neck and face with a weapon for a second time is a clear case of corpse mutilation, committed to express his abnormal emotions. Such actions must also be met with severe punishment."
Choi was indicted and detained last May on charges of stabbing and killing his girlfriend multiple times with a weapon on the rooftop of a building near Gangnam Station in Seoul.
On June 13, the appellate court sentenced Choi to 30 years in prison, which is four years longer than the sentence imposed by the lower court.
