Lee Jaesung, Chairman of the Korea Environmental Information Research Center, has joined the 'Bye Bye Plastic' challenge. This challenge is a public participation campaign organized by the Ministry of Environment to reduce plastic pollution and raise awareness about resource circulation. It began in August 2023 and has been actively ongoing since then.
The purpose of the challenge is to encourage people to reduce their daily use of plastic and to practice environmental protection. Participants film themselves waving both hands in a 'BYE' gesture, share the video on social media, and nominate the next participant. Jeong Mongseok, Master of Energy Management, recently took part in the challenge and nominated Chairman Lee Jaesung as the next participant.
Through his participation in the challenge, Lee Jaesung stated, "The plastic we use is discarded and, during rainfall, flows into the sea, becoming microplastics that threaten our health." He emphasized that "to solve these problems, the government must take the lead in establishing comprehensive measures and systems." He also explained that "the plastic we use daily causes soil, water, and air pollution, threatening the Earth's ecosystem," highlighting the importance of reducing plastic usage.
In this campaign, Chairman Lee Jaesung declared a farewell to plastic by waving both hands in the 'BYE' gesture, joining efforts to raise awareness about the issue of microplastics. This act serves as a reminder that plastic pollution is not simply a waste problem, but a complex issue tied to the survival of modern society as a whole.
He stressed, "Materials like plastic are lightweight and convenient, but we must not forget that their environmental footprint lingers as long as metals do," emphasizing the need for a fundamental shift in material choices and consumption patterns.
Chairman Lee Jaesung nominated Moon Hyungnam, Dean of the College of Global Convergence at Sookmyung Women's University, Lee Junwon, CEO of Artilab Co., Ltd., and Jeong Sangki, Chairman of the Korea Indoor Environment Association, as the next participants. He expressed hope that more people would join in protecting the environment.
Taking this challenge as an opportunity, Lee Jaesung plans to continue various activities to reduce plastic pollution and is actively seeking solutions to environmental problems using AI technology. In particular, he is leading the establishment of environmental policies and technological development through the Korea Environmental Information Research Center and the Climate Tech AI Convergence Promotion Institute, continuing efforts for a better planet.
