"Flexible Response Even with 19 Passengers"... 'AI Bus' Debuts in Beijing, China

Alarm Sounds If Passengers Do Not Fasten Seatbelts
"Providing Autonomous Services Such as Unmanned Delivery and Buses"

Unmanned buses without drivers and driverless tractors have appeared in Beijing, China.

On June 20, China Economic Net reported, "Recently, an unmanned bus carrying 19 passengers departed smoothly in Fangshan District, southwest of Beijing."

According to the report, the size of the bus is similar to that of a regular bus. A large screen installed inside the bus provides information on road conditions, allowing passengers to check operational details. The unmanned bus is equipped with cameras that can monitor road conditions in a 360-degree view within a radius of approximately 200 meters. It also features various functions such as obstacle avoidance, intersection crossing, and autonomous lane changes. The bus automatically stops at traffic lights to wait for pedestrians. The algorithm detects changes in real time, down to the second, and enables precise decision-making.

The safety officer seated in the driver's seat did not hold the steering wheel. The main duty of the safety officer is to press the emergency brake button to stop the vehicle if a problem occurs during operation or in the event of an emergency. The bus is also equipped with passenger safety protection devices. If a passenger does not fasten their seatbelt, an alarm sounds.

China Economic Net reported that "the AI driver responded flexibly even on complex roads." This unmanned bus was independently developed by UISEE Technology, an autonomous driving technology company in Beijing. In an interview, UISEE CEO Wu Gansha stated, "We want to become a global AI leader, beyond China." The media outlet reported that UISEE has provided various autonomous driving services, including unmanned delivery, unmanned buses, and unmanned logistics, to several countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Qatar.

Xinhua News Agency reported on June 16 about an unmanned tractor developed by Beijing UISEE Technology. This tractor has achieved a maximum unmanned driving distance of 5.8 million kilometers. The technology has been applied at more than 20 airports domestically and internationally, including Hamad International Airport in Qatar and Changi Airport in Singapore. Scientist Zhu Songchun told Xinhua, "With top talent gathering, China is becoming a source of artificial intelligence and a breeding ground for new technologies and concepts."

Liu Weiliang, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology and a member of the Party leadership, stated, "Beijing has strongly promoted digital technology transformation centered on artificial intelligence," and announced that the added value of Beijing's digital economy increased from 1.76 trillion yuan (approximately 335.4032 trillion won) in 2021 to 2.2 trillion yuan (approximately 419.32 trillion won) in 2024.
