Park Jiyoung Appointed as Public Relations Officer
The team of special prosecutors assisting Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok (Judicial Research and Training Institute, Class 19), who is leading the investigation into the December 3 Martial Law-related insurrection case involving former President Yoon Sukyeol, was formed on June 20.
The special prosecutor's office announced to the media on this day that the list of six assistant special prosecutors had been finalized. The six assistant special prosecutors who will support Special Prosecutor Cho are: Park Eoksu, attorney at Law Firm Igong (Class 29); Park Jiyoung, attorney at Law Firm Bae, Kim & Lee (Class 29); Lee Yoonje, professor at Myongji University (Class 29); Kim Hyungsoo, attorney at Law Firm Namsan (Class 30); Park Taeho, attorney at Kim & Chang (Class 32); and Jang Woosung, attorney at Law Firm Bae, Kim & Lee (Class 34).
Except for Assistant Special Prosecutor Jang, the other five assistant special prosecutors are former prosecutors. Assistant Special Prosecutor Jang is a former police officer. On June 17, Special Prosecutor Cho selected eight candidates for assistant special prosecutor and submitted the appointment request to the Ministry of Personnel Management. Regarding this, Special Prosecutor Cho explained, "We reflected the recommendations of the Korean Bar Association and nominated a former police officer with outstanding investigative and case management abilities."
President Lee Jaemyung selected six out of the eight candidates and approved the appointments of the six assistant special prosecutors the previous night. After internal discussions among the assistant special prosecutors, it was decided that Park Jiyoung would be in charge of public relations. As a result, the special prosecutor's office, which began its investigation into the insurrection case on June 18, has established its basic structure and is expected to accelerate the investigation in earnest.
Assistant Special Prosecutor Park Eoksu has served as Director of the Trial and Litigation Division at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Chief of the Gunsan Branch of the Jeonju District Prosecutors' Office, Acting Deputy Chief Prosecutor at the Gwangju High Prosecutors' Office, and Human Rights Policy Officer at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, and has experience seconded to the Constitutional Court. Assistant Special Prosecutor Kim has served as Director of Criminal Division 1 at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Chief of Criminal Divisions 6 and 2 at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, Deputy Chief Prosecutor at the Jeonju and Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Offices, and Chief of the Dongbu Branch of the Busan District Prosecutors' Office.
Assistant Special Prosecutor Park Taeho has worked at the Criminal Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Justice, as a Research Prosecutor at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, and as Chief of Criminal Division 9 at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. Assistant Special Prosecutor Lee served as a prosecutor at the Legal Affairs Office of the Ministry of Justice, later moved to academia as a professor at Ajou University Law School, and worked as a legal officer at the former UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Assistant Special Prosecutor Jang was specially recruited as a superintendent and served as Chief of the Criminal Division at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency, Chief of Seongbuk Police Station in Seoul, and Chief of the Foreign Affairs Investigation Division at the National Police Agency.
Assistant Special Prosecutor Park Jiyoung, who will be in charge of public relations, is the first female prosecutor in the history of the prosecution to serve in the Prosecutors' Affairs Division 1 of the Criminal Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Justice. This division is responsible for personnel and budget affairs of the prosecution. She also has experience working as a special investigations prosecutor (at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office), which is a representative investigative unit. She has served as Director of the Crime Victims and Human Rights Division at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Chief of Criminal Division 6 at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, Team Leader of the Prosecution Reform Task Force at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Deputy Chief Prosecutor at the Daejeon and Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Offices, and Chief of the Trial Division at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office.
