Lee Myunghyun Says "Preparatory Work Continues Behind the Scenes"

Special Prosecutor Lee Myunghyun, who is investigating the Chae Sangbyeong special prosecution case, stated that he has not yet received notification from the Presidential Office regarding the appointment of deputy special prosecutors. In response to criticism that the Chae Sangbyeong special prosecution team's preparation is slow, he replied, "That is not the case."

On June 20, Lee made these remarks while meeting with reporters at a law office in Seocho-dong, Seoul.

Among the three current special prosecutors, Lee was the last to complete the recommendation of candidates for deputy special prosecutor, finalizing the list of eight candidates on June 18. President Lee Jaemyung is required to appoint the deputy special prosecutors within three days of the recommendation. The Chae Sangbyeong special prosecution team may include four deputy special prosecutors, twenty dispatched prosecutors, forty dispatched government officials, and forty dispatched investigators.

Regarding the schedule for receiving investigation records from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials and the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office, both of which are currently investigating related cases, Lee stated, "We will proceed after the announcement of the deputy special prosecutors." When asked about the number of personnel to be dispatched from the Corruption Investigation Office, he said, "I will inform you later," avoiding a direct answer. Regarding whether he intends to request personnel dispatch from the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office, he said, "I will do so if necessary."

When asked whether the preparation speed is slower than that of the insurrection and Kim Keonhee special prosecution teams, Lee replied, "That is not the case. Preparatory work is underway behind the scenes."

Regarding whether he would meet with a representative of former Marine 1st Division Commander Lim Sungkeun, who has been implicated in lobbying allegations and reportedly requested a meeting with Lee on this day, he answered, "I have not heard about it, so I will consider it if necessary in the future."

The Chae Sangbyeong special prosecution office is planned to be located on the 3rd to 5th floors of the Heenmulgyul Building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, near the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office and District Court. However, as the relevant budget has not yet been received, the office is only under a provisional contract, and the move-in date has not been determined.
