Work Report to the National Policy Planning Committee Amid Organizational Conflict
The Korea Communications Commission, which is effectively being operated as a one-person system under Chairperson Lee Jinsook, will deliver a work report to the National Policy Planning Committee at the Government Complex Gwacheon on June 20. The report will be presented by Secretary General Kim Younggwan, who is serving as acting chief. It has been reported that Chairperson Lee will not attend the briefing in person and will remain in her office as usual.
As with other ministries, the briefing will be attended by senior-level officials rather than the minister or vice minister. However, in the case of the Korea Communications Commission, the atmosphere is reportedly somewhat tense due to intertwined political interests and organizational conflicts. In particular, Chairperson Lee was appointed during the administration of President Yoon Suk-yeol and has demonstrated a firm political stance throughout the processes of impeachment, suspension from duty, and reinstatement.
Recently, Chairperson Lee has expressed her views at Cabinet meetings, ranging from the need to guarantee the tenure of the chairperson to opposing the "three major special prosecutors." In addition, with Vice Chairperson Kim Taegyu having voluntarily resigned, the commission has now shifted to a one-person system.
With the launch of the new administration, there is growing attention within the organization regarding the possibility of restructuring media-related ministries, including the Korea Communications Commission. However, it is expected that this work report will largely remain within the scope of existing business plans.
Earlier this year, the Korea Communications Commission presented its vision of "realizing a trusted and vibrant digital and media society." In the broadcasting sector, it has been pursuing re-authorization and re-approval, as well as regulatory reforms to enhance autonomy. In the telecommunications sector, key priorities include protecting artificial intelligence (AI) users, strengthening platform reliability, blocking illegal information, and improving device distribution.
