Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province has established a "Comprehensive Landslide Prevention Plan" to prevent landslide damage caused by heavy rainfall during the summer season.
On June 19, Suwon City announced that the Parks and Greenery Office and the four district offices will operate five "Landslide Countermeasure Situation Rooms" until October 15.
The situation rooms will be responsible for weather monitoring, issuing forecasts, providing resident guidance, and conducting on-site inspections. They will respond promptly according to the crisis level.
By utilizing the Korea Forest Service's Landslide Prediction Information System, the city will predict landslides and issue forecasts. In the event of a crisis, residents will be guided to evacuate via text messages and local broadcasts.
Patrols and inspections will be intensified, especially in areas vulnerable to landslides. To establish a swift resident evacuation system, education and evacuation drills for residents will be conducted in areas such as Yeonmu-dong.
The city will also undertake sabo projects, which involve installing dams or structures in mountains and valleys to prevent soil and rocks from falling. A total of 406 million won will be invested in five locations, including Sangwanggyo-dong, Pajang-dong, and Yeonmu-dong, to complete sabo dam and stream conservation works by the end of this month. In addition, major mountain sabo facilities and forest recreation facilities in areas such as Gwanggyosan and Chilbosan will be inspected regularly.
A Suwon City official stated, "We will focus on a prevention-centered response to reduce landslide damage and concentrate on establishing a resident evacuation system," adding, "We will proactively respond to the climate crisis to protect the safety of our citizens."
