5,000 Fewer Claims Than the Previous Week
On June 18 (local time), the U.S. Department of Labor announced that the number of new unemployment claims for the previous week (June 8?14) was 245,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the prior week.
This figure is slightly below the market forecast of 246,000 compiled by Dow Jones.
The four-week moving average of new claims increased by 5,750 from the previous week, reaching 245,500. This is the highest level in one year and ten months since August 2023, indicating a continued upward trend in new unemployment claims.
The number of continued unemployment claims, which refers to those who applied for benefits for two weeks or more, was recorded at 1,945,000 for the first week of this month (June 1?7). This represents a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week.
Amid growing concerns that the tariff policies of the Donald Trump administration could raise the unemployment rate, Wall Street is closely monitoring labor market indicators that provide insight into real economic conditions.
