Superintendent Lim Taehee: "First Nationwide Introduction of AI Evaluation... The Beginning of Restoring the Essence of Education" Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has developed and is operating the 'High Learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) Writing and Essay Evaluation System' to nurture talents needed for the future society and to implement fair assessments. The newly developed writing and essay evaluation system supports the entire evaluation process in a standardized manner. A key feature is that, by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), the system automatically grades student answers and provides feedback according to the evaluation criteria and elements designed by teachers.

The evaluation system is operated through the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education's teaching and learning platform, 'High Learning.' As a result, it plans to bring new changes to schools by providing standardized evaluation tools, including: AI-based automatic grading and feedback according to the 2022 revised curriculum achievement standards and evaluation elements; evaluation that converts handwritten student answers into digital text (OCR engine); and a one-stop process for the entire cycle of evaluation design, distribution, grading, feedback, and reporting.

In addition, the system is expected to support student growth and enhance the credibility of school evaluations by enabling customized feedback for each student based on evaluation results and allowing cumulative review of student assessments.

The development of this evaluation system was carried out as part of the 'Future University Entrance Examination Reform Plan' proposed by Superintendent Lim in January.

Superintendent Lim recognized the need to establish a new evaluation system to restore the essence of education and support student growth. He requested active efforts to develop a system that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to: ensure objectivity in grading writing and essay evaluations; reduce the evaluation burden on teachers; and enable management of the entire process from grading criteria to evaluation and feedback.

Starting in July, the Provincial Office of Education plans to apply the new evaluation system first to first-year middle and high school students in the subjects of Korean, social studies, and science, and gradually expand its application to all grades and all subjects in the future.

Additionally, to strengthen teachers' ability to utilize the new evaluation system, training will be provided to over 4,000 teachers, and the policy implementation and pilot operation research group will be supported to conduct empirical research on AI writing and essay evaluations and to identify outstanding cases in the field.

Superintendent Lim stated, "The essence of education is not the skill of finding the correct answer, but preparing students for the competencies and character needed in the future society they will live in," adding, "The AI writing and essay evaluation system is an attempt to support student growth and change the admissions-centered education system."

He further emphasized, "The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education will open up paths that no one has sought and roads that no one has traveled for the future of education."
