Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, 62, will receive his first Oscar trophy in 44 years since his debut.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on its official website on June 17 (local time) that Tom Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas have been selected as this year's recipients of the Academy Honorary Awards. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented to singer Dolly Parton.

The awards will be presented at the 16th Governors Awards, which will take place on November 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood, California, United States.

Janet Yang, president of the Academy, stated, "This year's Governors Awards celebrate legendary artists who have made a profound impact on the film industry," adding, "The Board of Governors is honored to officially recognize these outstanding individuals."

The Academy described Cruise as "one of the most famous and commercially successful actors in history," and said, "He has inspired everyone with his dramatic contributions to the filmmaking community and audiences, as well as his extraordinary dedication to the stunt community." The Academy also highlighted that he "played a central role in reviving the industry by releasing 'Top Gun: Maverick' in theaters during the downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic." Cruise is also well known for personally performing high-risk stunts in the 'Mission: Impossible' series and other films.

He has been nominated for an Academy Award for acting three times and once as a producer for Best Picture, but has never won. He was nominated for Best Actor for 'Born on the Fourth of July' in 1990, again for Best Actor for 'Jerry Maguire' in 1997, for Best Supporting Actor for 'Magnolia' in 2000, and as a producer for Best Picture for 'Top Gun: Maverick' in 2023.

According to the Associated Press, "Cruise will finally receive the trophy, 35 years after his first Oscar nomination." Hollywood media outlet Variety commented, "Cruise is a star who has persistently championed the value of the theatrical moviegoing experience through his unwavering passion for cinemas," and added, "His Oscar win is more than just a reward for his career."
