The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education is conducting consulting sessions for alternative schools.
On June 17, the provincial office announced that it would carry out on-site consulting for 10 alternative schools within its jurisdiction by July, in accordance with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Previously, on June 12, the office conducted the first round of consulting at Gyeonggi Saeul School in Icheon and Shinnaneun School in Anseong.
Gyeonggi Saeul School is the only public boarding-type commissioned alternative middle school in the province. The school offers various alternative curricula, including labor (baking), arts (theater and film, spatial design, music and culture), career (changemaker), and physical education (community play, sports climbing). It provides a range of customized education programs for students who find it difficult to continue their studies at their original middle schools due to psychological or environmental factors.
Gyeonggi Saeul School has achieved notable results as an alternative school, such as introducing a "Teacher's Day" song created using an artificial intelligence (AI) program, and sharing examples of student growth.
Through these on-site consulting sessions, the provincial office aims to examine the operation of alternative education programs at each school. In the second half of the year, it also plans to share best practices by organizing a "Day for Sharing Growth of Alternative Schools."
An official from the provincial office stated, "Until now, alternative schools have been excluded from school evaluations as they are classified as various types of schools that implement diverse education, such as experience- and character-centered education and education focused on developing individual talents and aptitudes. Starting in 2026, we plan to introduce evaluation indicators tailored to alternative schools, in order to promote their autonomous growth as part of public education and to strengthen accountability."
