Winning 60 out of 106 Votes
"I Will Lead Party Change and Renewal"
Song Eonseok, a three-term lawmaker from the TK (Daegu and North Gyeongsang) region representing Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang, has been elected as the new floor leader of the People Power Party.
On June 16, the People Power Party announced that Song received 60 out of a total of 106 votes in the floor leader election. Lee Heonseung, a four-term lawmaker representing Busanjin-gu-eul in Busan, received 16 votes, while Kim Seongwon, a three-term lawmaker representing Dongducheon, Yangju, and Yeoncheon-eul in Gyeonggi Province, received 30 votes.
After the results were announced, Song expressed his thoughts by saying, "It is a grave mistake to regress to the past," and added, "I will move forward focusing only on the future and the people."
Song also emphasized, "We are an opposition party that has lost power and a minority party in the National Assembly with an overwhelming disadvantage. As the floor leader of a minority opposition party, there will inevitably be limitations to my role and function, but I will lead change and renewal."
Earlier, in his policy speech, Song proposed holding a party convention as soon as possible. He explained that for the party to establish stable leadership, a leadership team directly elected by party members and the public must be launched quickly.
He also pledged to form an innovation committee for party reform. He stressed the need for a parliamentary caucus that listens to the voices of the public, not just those within the party.
Song stated, "I will create a forum to gather the collective will of our lawmakers for reform and change," and added, "Based on the principles of balanced appointments and placing the right people in the right positions, I will ensure the party's capabilities are fully mobilized, and I will also improve communication structures to regain the trust of voters in the Seoul metropolitan area."
