Series of Hot Air Balloon Crashes During Sightseeing Tours
Sudden Gusts of Wind Cited as Cause of Accidents
There have been a series of casualties resulting from hot air balloon crashes during popular sightseeing tours.
According to Xinhua News Agency, on June 15 (local time), a hot air balloon carrying 35 tourists crashed in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to ten others, as announced by the military and police.
Local media reported that the pilot of the crashed hot air balloon was unlicensed. The pilot was reportedly arrested immediately after the accident.
On the same day, another hot air balloon crash occurred in Aksaray Province, central T?rkiye. According to ABC News and other outlets, one pilot died and 19 Indonesian tourists were injured.
The cause of the accidents is believed to be sudden gusts of wind. The abrupt change in wind forced the hot air balloon to attempt an emergency landing in a nearby village, but the crash could not be avoided.
Central T?rkiye is home to the famous Cappadocia tourist area, known for its unique rock formations, where hot air balloon tours are popular. Previously, in 2022, two Spanish tourists also died in a hot air balloon crash while touring Cappadocia.
