In a statement released that day, the Gwangju Chapter of the Democratic Party said, "On June 13, 2000, the scene of President Kim Dae Jung arriving at Pyongyang Sunan Airport by plane for the first time since the division of the peninsula drew worldwide attention," adding, "At that time, the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration served as a historic milestone that ended antagonism and confrontation, and prepared for exchange, cooperation, and unification."

The statement continued, "Although inter-Korean relations have gone through numerous twists and turns, democratic governments have carried on the spirit of the June 15 Declaration and sought ways to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula through the October 4 Declaration, the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration, and the September Pyongyang Joint Declaration."

The Gwangju Chapter also stated, "The fourth democratic government, led by President Lee Jae Myung, will continue efforts to improve inter-Korean relations," and noted, "The suspension of loudspeaker broadcasts toward North Korea, ordered by President Lee on June 11, is the first such measure." The statement concluded, "Together with the new democratic government, the Democratic Party of Korea will reaffirm the spirit of the June 15 Declaration and reopen the path to peace and shared prosperity."
