Arklink, a company specializing in countering webcam phishing, recently reported that methods of webcam phishing (also known as webcam scams) exploiting major domestic messengers such as KakaoTalk and LINE are spreading rapidly. The company emphasized that particular caution is needed regarding new types of digital crimes known as Momttoscam and Youngsexscam.
According to actual cases reported to Arklink, perpetrators approach victims through dating apps, then naturally guide them to continue conversations on KakaoTalk or LINE, and subsequently suggest video calls as a way to initiate their crimes. A typical method involves saying things like "I can't send photos" or "Let's talk on KakaoTalk" to switch platforms, which is then followed by obtaining compromising videos and threatening to distribute them.
As such, the tactics are diversifying, including methods like Momttoscam, which involves repeatedly provoking reactions from the victim to continue the blackmail, and Youngsexscam, where trust is built through video-based explicit conversations before the threats begin.
Arklink stated, "If victims panic and send money out of fear or abruptly cut off communication, it can actually worsen the situation," adding that "perpetrators use sophisticated psychological strategies, such as sending threatening messages every few minutes to induce psychological confusion."
The company further emphasized, "The most important thing in the event of a webcam phishing incident is to never comply with monetary demands and to seek expert consultation and technical support as quickly as possible," and added, "Systematic initial response, rather than hasty actions, is key to preventing further damage."
Arklink currently operates a 24-hour emergency consultation system and has established a comprehensive protection system for webcam phishing victims, including video distribution blocking solutions, perpetrator access control technology, and psychological and legal support services.
A company representative warned, "Recently, the age range of victims has expanded from teenagers to young adults just starting their careers, and messenger-based crime methods are becoming more sophisticated. Special caution is needed when exchanging private videos or photos with someone you have just met through a messenger."
Meanwhile, Arklink is a specialized company responding to various digital crimes, including webcam phishing, and is expanding its victim protection activities based on technologies such as deepfake crime prevention and malicious app analysis.
