Service Access Delays... Cause Was "System Update"
"We Apologize for the Inconvenience... Additional Compensation Information Coming in Early July"
OpenAI, the operator of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) service ChatGPT, announced that it will provide compensation next month to paid subscribers in South Korea following the recent service disruption.
On June 13, OpenAI sent an email to ChatGPT paid subscribers in South Korea, stating, "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused," and added, "We have identified the affected servers and have completed restoration to normal operations. For paid users, we will provide further information regarding compensation by early July."
Previously, from 3:36 p.m. on June 10 to 7:00 a.m. on June 11 (Korea Standard Time), ChatGPT and API services experienced global disruptions, including delayed access.
OpenAI explained, "This incident was caused by a system update," and added, "As connections to a significant number of servers were temporarily lost, available processing capacity was reduced, which may have resulted in delayed response times or intermittent errors."
According to an OpenAI representative, this compensation decision applies specifically to paid subscribers in South Korea, rather than being implemented globally. South Korea has the second largest number of ChatGPT paid subscribers in the world, following the United States.
OpenAI recently established a legal entity in South Korea and is preparing to open its first office in Seoul. The company is currently recruiting staff to work at the Seoul office.
