Former President Moon Jaein stated that inter-Korean relations over the past three years have been at their most dangerous since the Korean War, and expressed his belief that the Lee Jaemyung administration will restore these relations and once again pave the way for peace.
On June 13, former President Moon delivered this message in a congratulatory address read on his behalf by Park Neunghoo, executive representative of Forum Saeijae, at the academic conference marking the 25th anniversary of the June 15 Inter-Korean Joint Declaration and the inaugural ceremony of the “Council for the Succession and Development of Democratic Government’s Korean Peninsula Peace,” both held at the National Assembly.
Former President Moon said, “Due to three years of regression, inter-Korean relations have been damaged to the point where recovery is difficult, and the Korean Peninsula now faces its most dangerous situation since the Korean War. The international order surrounding the Korean Peninsula has been thrown into turmoil by the power struggle between the United States and China and the looming threat of a new Cold War, while North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missiles have become even more advanced. The Lee Jaemyung administration now bears the grave responsibility of overcoming this grave situation and ushering in a new era of peace.”
He continued, “The new administration inevitably faces a heavy burden, but by inheriting and further developing the achievements of the Democratic Party government, it will make significant progress toward peace on the Korean Peninsula. Since this process will not be smooth, new solutions to these complex challenges must be sought.”
Meanwhile, the event was organized as the launch of the “Council for the Succession and Development of Democratic Government’s Korean Peninsula Peace,” with the participation of the Kim Daejung Foundation, the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, Forum Saeijae?a group of former Blue House officials from the Moon Jaein administration?and the Korean Peninsula Peace Forum.
Regarding the June 15 Inter-Korean Joint Declaration, former President Moon described it as “one of the greatest legacies left to us by former President Kim Daejung,” and called it “a historic event that fundamentally transformed inter-Korean relations from war and confrontation to peace and cooperation.”
