Anchovies from Jeollanam-do have begun being exported to Australia, marking the start of a full-scale push into the global market.
On June 13, Jeollanam-do announced that 20 tons of dried anchovies were shipped from the Oseong Fisheries Factory in Dolsan-eup, Yeosu.
The export shipment consists of three types: anchovies for broth, stir-fried anchovies, and anchovies for soup. They have been processed into small packages of 150 grams each. The products will be supplied to local consumers in Australia through Jeonnam’s overseas permanent sales outlets and Korean markets.
Oseong Fisheries, which led the export, is a seafood manufacturing company headquartered in Dolsan-eup, Yeosu. The company manages the entire process in-house, from anchovy fishing to drying, processing, packaging, and shipping, through a systematic management system.
To enter overseas markets, Oseong Fisheries has obtained various certifications, including the seafood traceability system, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety HACCP, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries quality certification, Jeonnam Governor’s quality certification, and Yeosu City Haenuri certification. In addition, the company has acquired Malaysian Halal certification (JAKIM) and the international food safety certification SQF-2000 (level 3), establishing a quality management system that meets international standards. As a result, it has been registered on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Green List (food safety) and has received import approval from the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Department of Agriculture.
In 2024, exports of agricultural and marine products from Jeonnam to Australia reached $11.14 million, an increase of 12.4% compared to the previous year. As of April this year, exports have reached $3 million, up 4.9% from the same period last year, continuing a steady growth trend.
Oh Jaeseong, CEO of Oseong Fisheries, stated, "Our goal is to produce clean and trustworthy seafood products," adding, "We will work to ensure that anchovies, which have long appealed to Korean tastes, expand beyond the United States, Japan, and Australia to reach the European Union (EU) as well."
Shin Hyungon, Director of International Cooperation for Jeollanam-do, said, "The overseas expansion of local seafood companies greatly enhances the brand competitiveness of Jeonnam seafood products and revitalizes the local economy," and added, "We will continue to actively promote the globalization of Jeonnam seafood products through various support measures."
This export was made possible through 'My Home Food,' the operator of Jeonnam’s overseas permanent sales outlet headquartered in Sydney, Australia. The outlet currently operates in two locations, Westride and Hornsby, and Jeonnam Province plans to continue expanding its global distribution network based on this foundation.
