Achievement: Selected as an Excellent Institution for Three Consecutive Years
On June 13, Gwangjin District in Seoul announced that it had been selected as the top institution in the '2025 Disaster Management Assessment' organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, earning the Presidential Award. The assessment, conducted annually since 2005 in accordance with the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety, targets 340 disaster management agencies nationwide, including central government agencies, local governments, and public institutions.
Gwangjin District has achieved the distinction of being selected as an excellent institution for three consecutive years in this assessment. This year, by receiving the Presidential Award, the district secured various financial incentives, such as special grants and bonuses. In the evaluation, the district received consistently high scores across a range of indicators, including disaster management fund operations, disaster preparedness drills, manual management, rapid initial response capabilities in the event of a disaster, and securing disaster relief infrastructure.
In particular, Gwangjin District was highly evaluated for its proactive disaster response system, which includes being the first local government in the country to develop a garbage balloon response manual, establishing a climate disaster response system through the operation of smart shelters and the Gwangjin Water Supply Point, improving school routes in Gwangjin-style child protection zones to build an advanced pedestrian traffic safety system, and strengthening a 24-hour disaster safety situation room for constant response readiness.
Along with the 'Disaster Management Assessment,' Gwangjin District has been consistently recognized as an excellent institution in central evaluations conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, such as the 'Disaster Response Safe Korea Drill,' thereby establishing a thorough disaster preparedness and response system.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, stated, "This Presidential Award is the first for Gwangjin District since the Disaster Management Assessment began in 2005, and it is the result of prioritizing and working for the safety of our residents." He added, "We will continue to do our utmost to make Gwangjin even safer through proactive and systematic disaster response."
