Jeollanam-do plans to hold the Offshore Wind Power Industry Expo at the Yeosu Expo Hall on June 18-19, aiming to promote its vision for fostering the offshore wind power industry both domestically and internationally.
The Offshore Wind Power Industry Expo, themed "A Bold Challenge to Become a Global Offshore Wind Power Hub," marks the first time a local government in Korea has ambitiously prepared such an event to present its vision for developing the offshore wind power industry and to sign agreements with related companies.
More than 1,000 participants are expected to attend the event, including Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Youngrok, who has led Korea’s offshore wind power sector, as well as members of the National Assembly, power generation companies, equipment manufacturers, and representatives from cities and counties across Jeollanam-do.
On the first day, the program will include the signing of agreements on establishing a supply chain for equipment, implementing an energy basic income, and founding and operating an offshore wind power industry education center. In addition, Jeollanam-do will present its vision to expand the supply of 13GW of offshore wind power in the eastern region and outline preferential measures for the local supply chain. Power generation companies will also present the status of their projects and ways to participate in the supply chain.
The second day will feature the announcement of a public-led complex development plan centered on Yeosu and Goheung, as well as promotional activities and contract-matching consultations for equipment suppliers based in Jeollanam-do throughout both days.
The offshore wind power industry, which is expected to become a future growth engine for the Jeollanam-do region, had slowed somewhat over the past two to three years due to the global economic downturn and rising raw material prices. However, with the enactment of the Offshore Wind Power Special Act this year and the designation of the 3.2GW Shinan offshore wind power complex in Jeollanam-do, the industry is now entering a new phase.
Governor Kim Youngrok stated, "Although there have been signs of a return to fossil fuels following the launch of the second Trump administration in the United States, the international community is instead seizing this as an opportunity to expand renewable energy. With the designation of the Shinan offshore wind power complex in April, we must strive to make the Asia-Pacific region the hub of the offshore wind power industry, with the eastern region?centered on Yeosu and Goheung?at the core of this effort."
