Gurye County, South Jeolla Province, announced that the rally urging a policy shift on the Jirisan cable car and approval of the Gurye route was successfully concluded.

The rally, held on June 12 at the Seomjin Art Hall in Gurye, was organized by the Gurye Jirisan Cable Car Promotion Committee and hosted by the Gurye County branch of the Global Environment Conservation and Welfare Association. Approximately 300 people attended, including 26 local organizations such as the Gurye branch of the Small Business Association, as well as local residents.

This rally was organized in response to the Ministry of Environment's plan to form and operate a National Park Expert Committee in order to establish a rational direction for cable car policy based on social consensus.

Participants emphasized in their resolution that "the installation of the cable car is a core strategy for Gurye County, contributing to regional development, revitalization of tourism, job creation, and improved accessibility for the transportation disadvantaged." They also pointed out that "the project has been stalled for a long period due to adherence to the single-route principle."

In particular, the rally strongly called on the Ministry of Environment to: give priority to resolving the cable car pilot projects designated in 2012; abolish the unrealistic single-route principle; guarantee that local governments where the cable car pilot projects have not been implemented can participate in the formation of the National Park Expert Committee; and ensure that information related to the Ministry of Environment's policy shift on national park cable cars is shared with the local governments designated for pilot projects.

Additionally, Gurye County announced plans to cooperate with other local governments promoting cable car projects, such as those in Seoraksan and Sobaeksan, to jointly respond for a rational shift in national park policy and balanced regional development.

Gurye County reiterated that, as it faces the risk of local extinction due to population decline and aging, the cable car project is a strategy that can simultaneously attract tourists, revitalize the local economy, and restore environmental value.

An event organizer stated, "We hope this rally will serve as a turning point for changes in environmental policy and revitalization of the local economy," adding, "The organizing groups plan to visit the Ministry of Environment soon to deliver the adopted resolution."
