Jeollanam-do Takes Full-Fledged Steps Toward Official Glocal University Designation

Jeollanam-do has officially begun efforts for the full designation of the 'Dongsin University-Chodang University-Mokpo Science University Alliance' and the 'Mokpo Maritime University-Korea Maritime University Integration,' which were selected for preliminary designation as Glocal Universities. Jeollanam-do has officially launched efforts toward the full designation of the 'Dongsin University-Chodang University-Mokpo Science University Alliance' and the 'Mokpo Maritime University-Korea Maritime University Integration,' both of which were selected for preliminary designation as Glocal Universities.

In this year's final Glocal University 30 competition, the 'Dongsin University Alliance' was selected as a preliminary candidate by presenting a 'regional public alliance university' model aimed at jointly responding to regional crises and carbon neutrality. The 'Mokpo Maritime University Integration' was also selected as a preliminary candidate by proposing a 'one country, one maritime university' model, which aims to consolidate the capabilities of the maritime industry and foster glocal maritime talent.

To achieve full designation as Glocal Universities, Jeollanam-do has formed a 'Glocal University Response Task Force' that includes provincial government departments, affiliated organizations, universities, and industry representatives. As part of these efforts, a kickoff meeting was held at the Jeollanam-do Provincial Government Office on June 11, 2025.

During the meeting, participants shared an overview of the Glocal University 30 project, strategies for achieving full designation, and specialization plans for the preliminary designated universities. They also focused on discussing ways to establish an organic cooperation system with the universities.

Going forward, Jeollanam-do plans to fully operate the Glocal University Response Task Force to identify collaborative projects that reflect the unique characteristics of each university and the needs of the region. These projects will be incorporated into the implementation plan to develop a strategy that links university innovation with regional industrial development.

Additionally, after submitting the implementation plan, the province will thoroughly prepare for the in-person evaluation and actively engage in policy advocacy with the central government and the National Assembly to ensure that both universities achieve full designation. Comprehensive support will be provided throughout the process.

Myung Changhwan, Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs of Jeollanam-do, emphasized, "Glocal universities are a key strategy to address the crisis of regional extinction and to achieve mutual growth for both the region and its universities. Jeollanam-do will actively provide administrative and financial support to ensure that, following Suncheon National University and Mokpo National University, we achieve the distinction of Glocal University designation for a third consecutive year."

The preliminary designated universities must submit detailed implementation plans specifying their specialization strategies by early August 2025. After an in-person evaluation scheduled for August, the final decision on Glocal University designation is expected to be made in September 2025.
