[2025 Future Business Forum] "Quantum Computers to Be Commercialized Within 20 Years... Localization of Materials, Components, and Equipment Is the Formula for Success"

Quantum Computing Technology Session: Discussion on the Current State and Future
"Quantum Computing Commercialization Is Within Reach... Expected Within 20 Years"
Quantum Computing Technology Gains Global Attention, Investment Expanding
"Hope the New Administration Will Pursue Quantum Computing Policy from a Long-Term Perspective"

"In the field of quantum computers, I believe we should consider the formula for success that our country applied in the semiconductor industry. Rather than focusing on finished products like central processing units (CPUs), we have a better chance if we approach it from the perspective of materials, components, and equipment (so-bu-jang)."

Yoon Jiweon, CEO of SDT, offered this advice regarding the direction of South Korea's quantum computer industry during the '2025 Asia Future Business Forum' hosted by Asia Economy at Lotte Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul, on the morning of June 11. As the development of quantum computers requires enormous investment, he suggested that, instead of competing head-on with the United States or China, South Korea should focus on essential and differentiated material sectors within quantum computing, similar to the so-bu-jang strategy.

From the government’s perspective, it was emphasized that as many countries are expected to form alliances and partnerships for quantum computer development, South Korea should join these efforts by leveraging its manufacturing capabilities in materials, components, and equipment. Shim Jooseop, Director of Quantum Innovation Technology Development at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "Since South Korea has strengths in manufacturing (so-bu-jang), countries around the world are examining whether there are opportunities to collaborate with us during the quantum computer development process."

The expert panel session, held under the theme "How Far Has Quantum Computing Technology Come? Is It a Feasible Future?", featured CEO Yoon, Director Shim, and Eom Sangyoon, CEO of ID Quantique Korea, as panelists. The session was moderated by Baek Jongmin, Asia Economy tech specialist.

Quantum computing technology is also drawing attention from the financial sector. CEO Eom advised, "Global banks have already established dedicated departments to test and apply quantum technology," and added, "Given the high volume of international financial transactions in the domestic financial sector, it is necessary to prepare as well." Quantum computers can help construct investment product portfolios and prevent financial fraud. He also noted, "Major U.S. bank JPMorgan is increasing its investment in quantum computing technology every year."

The panelists agreed that the practical application of quantum computers is not far off. CEO Yoon presented a chart predicting the timeline for quantum computer commercialization based on Moore's Law and forecasted that commercialization would progress within the next 20 years. He explained, "Until last year, the question was whether quantum computers could even be built. Now, the field is advancing so rapidly that it is expected the era of quantum computers will arrive within 20 years at the latest."

Quantum cryptography, which utilizes quantum mechanics, has already been commercialized with domestic technology. Examples include the 'Galaxy Quantum' smartphone series equipped with quantum cryptography chipsets and the world’s first national certification system for quantum cryptography communication equipment, implemented by South Korea. CEO Eom emphasized, "Commercialization of quantum cryptography was possible thanks to localization," and added, "Collaboration among various so-bu-jang companies was essential for the commercialization process, and we were able to advance the technology through partnerships with more than 10 domestic companies."

The panelists highlighted the need for consistent policy implementation from the new administration. CEO Eom said, "Since the 'Act on the Promotion of Quantum Science and Technology and Quantum Industry' (Quantum Special Act) passed with 100% bipartisan support, I hope the new government will pursue the planned vision from a long-term perspective," and added, "Companies will also work hard on research to support industrialization and serve as a bridge for international cooperation."

CEO Yoon commented, "Quantum is not something that advances simply through basic science. It is closely linked to the entire industry," and continued, "Quantum venture companies can emerge when the economy is strong, and even after their establishment, they can only succeed under such conditions."
