Camping and Cooking Also Prohibited
Violations May Result in Fines of Up to 3 Million Won
Yeongju City in North Gyeongsang Province will re-designate the entire reservoir area of Yeongju Dam as a no fishing zone starting July 1, 2025.
Prior to this, the city is conducting an administrative notice and public opinion collection process from June 1 to June 30.
This fishing ban is being implemented for the following reasons: to prevent safety accidents caused by fluctuations in dam water levels; to alleviate traffic congestion on roads near the dam; and as a precautionary measure to prevent water pollution and preserve the ecosystem.
The Yeongju Dam reservoir area covers a total of 10.4 square kilometers, including the Pyeongeun-myeon and Isan-myeon areas. Prohibited activities include not only fishing, but also camping and cooking. Violations are subject to fines under the Water Environment Conservation Act: 1 million won for the first offense, 2 million won for the second, and 3 million won for the third or subsequent offenses.
According to Yeongju City, there has been a growing concern over accidents caused by unauthorized entry of anglers and sudden changes in water levels, as well as an increased need to improve the water quality of Yeongju Lake and preserve the ecological environment. As a result, the designation of the no fishing zone has been promoted in cooperation with Korea Water Resources Corporation, the local police station, and local residents.
From July 1, the city will establish a cooperative system with relevant organizations such as the Korea Water Resources Corporation Yeongju Dam branch and Yeongju Police Station. They will simultaneously implement measures to effectively inform the public of the fishing ban, including installing banners, broadcasting on-site announcements, conducting guidance activities, and cracking down on violations.
A city official stated, "This re-designation of the no fishing zone is not a simple regulation, but an essential measure to protect the lives of citizens and the environment. We ask for the active cooperation of all citizens and will do our utmost to ensure continuous management for a safe and clean Yeongju Dam."
Opinions regarding the fishing ban can be submitted in person at Yeongju City Hall or by mail until June 30. For more details, please contact the River Management Team of the River Department.
Yeongju City also plans to actively pursue sustainable water resource management policies to further improve the water quality of Yeongju Lake and preserve the ecological environment.
