The 'Green Good Design Awards' is a globally prestigious award ceremony jointly organized by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in the United States and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. It evaluates environment-focused innovation among leading global companies, institutions, and designers in sustainable design. It is considered one of the world's top three design awards, alongside the 'Red Dot Design Award' and the 'iF Design Award'.
Hankook Tire received main awards for the performance tire 'ION GT' from the world's first full lineup electric vehicle tire brand 'ION', and the 'Upcycle Longboard', a result of the upcycling project 'REMOVE'.
The ION GT is a high-performance tire exclusively for electric vehicles that uses raw materials certified by the internationally recognized eco-friendly certification system (ISCC PLUS). It incorporates bio-based silica, recycled PET fiber tire cords, recycled carbon black, and natural resin.
By applying the electric vehicle-specialized technology 'ION Innovative Technology', it delivers optimized driving performance. It received an A grade in three categories of the 'EU Tire Labeling' system: rolling resistance, wet grip, and noise. The groove design, inspired by the wrinkles of corn husks, reduces tire noise and provides performance optimized for electric vehicles.
For sustainable resource circulation, the Upcycle Longboard developed by recycling tires features a recycled rubber sheet from tires on its central deck, which absorbs shocks from the road and reduces noise and vibrations.
The top of the longboard is fitted with grip tape that mimics tire tread patterns, while the bottom features graphics and colors representing the brand identities of the world's top electric vehicle racing event 'ABB FIA Formula E World Championship', the global unified brand 'Hankook', and 'ION', earning recognition for its originality. The wheels use a bio-polyurethane material containing algae oil, jointly developed in collaboration with the American life sciences company Checkerspot, thereby enhancing its eco-friendly value.
A Hankook Tire official stated, "This is an example of going beyond simple recycling to realize a sustainable brand philosophy through designs that can communicate with the MZ generation."
