The establishment of a public hospital in the northeastern part of Gyeonggi Province, a project aimed at supporting residents struggling with insufficient medical infrastructure, is moving forward in earnest.
On June 10, Gyeonggi Province held a kickoff meeting at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office to discuss the feasibility of establishing a public hospital in northeastern Gyeonggi and the suitability of private investment. During the meeting, the direction of the project, the scope of the investigation, and future procedures were shared, and opinions were exchanged.
Gyeonggi Province is currently pursuing the establishment of public hospitals with more than 300 beds each in Namyangju and Yangju to expand medical infrastructure in the northeastern region. The kickoff meeting held on this day was the first official meeting with the cities and counties after Gyeonggi Province selected Namyangju and Yangju as candidate sites for the public hospital.
The study is being conducted by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute and will review the feasibility of establishing innovative public hospitals on sites in Baekbong District, Hopyeong-dong, Namyangju, and Okjeong New Town, Yangju. It will also assess the appropriateness of the Build-Transfer-Lease (BTL) private investment method. The study period is approximately 11 months, until February 2026.

Based on the results of the study, Gyeonggi Province plans to apply for a preliminary feasibility study next year, with the goal of starting construction in 2030.
Gyeonggi Province expects the northeastern public hospital to serve as an "innovative public hospital" equipped with functions for infectious disease response, emergency and rehabilitation treatment, and the provision of integrated medical and care services.
Yoo Youngcheol, Director of the Health and Wellness Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The innovative public hospital in northeastern Gyeonggi will go beyond simple medical treatment to become the center of a regionally integrated health infrastructure, covering infectious disease response, emergency medical care, and caregiving. Together with Namyangju and Yangju, we will create a significant starting point for resolving gaps in public healthcare and ensuring the health rights of our residents."
