During "May! Jeonnam Visit Month," which was organized by Jeonnam Province to support the travel industry in overcoming its crisis and to revitalize the local economy, a total of 7.88 million visitors came to Jeonnam over the course of one month, setting a new record for the highest number of tourists in May. This figure represents an increase of 1.87 million people (30%) compared to April, the month before the campaign (6.01 million), and an increase of 580,000 people (8%) compared to May of last year (7.3 million).
According to the official records from the Korea Expressway Corporation's "Expressway Public Data Portal," expressway traffic volume within Jeonnam in May reached 5.2 million vehicles, which is 1.1 million vehicles (27%) more than the previous month.
The 19 festivals held in Jeonnam in May attracted 1.59 million visitors, an increase of 250,000 people (20%) compared to 2024.
Many major tourist attractions also saw double-digit growth rates in visitor numbers compared to the same period last year, including Suncheonman National Garden and Suncheonman Wetland (790,000), Haenam Uhang-ri Dinosaur Museum (152,000), Hampyeong Expo Park (170,000), Damyang Juknokwon (124,000), and Mokpo Marine Cable Car (96,000).
This remarkable growth is attributed to Jeonnam Province's aggressive promotions for "Visit Month," such as half-price discounts on accommodations and workation packages, operation of specialized travel products, and discounts linking tourist attractions and experience facilities across cities and counties.
In May, the "Jeonnam Tourism Platform (JN TOUR)," which hosted discount events, saw 5,503 new sign-ups and monthly sales of 297 million won, representing increases of 2.3 times and 5.2 times, respectively, compared to the previous year.
The 39 travel agencies that operated specialized travel products recruited 20,900 participants, a 2.6-fold increase from last year, and generated over 2.1 billion won in sales during the month of May alone.
Yoo Hyunho, Director of Tourism and Sports at Jeonnam Province, said, "Through 'Jeonnam Visit Month,' we were able to share the joy of traveling in Jeonnam with many tourists and provide at least some support to the travel industry and the local economy. We will continue to do our best so that everyone can fully enjoy the charm of Jeonnam tourism."
