Lee's 'Daejang-dong Trial' Halted... Three Remaining Trials Also Likely to Be Postponed

Second Postponement Following Election Act Remand Trial

Following the remand trial of President Lee Jae Myung's Public Official Election Act case, the court has also postponed the hearing date for the Daejang-dong case.

The 33rd Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Jin Gwan) announced on the 10th that the trial date for President Lee's Daejang-dong, Baekhyeon-dong, Wirye development corruption allegations, and Seongnam FC allegations, which was originally scheduled for the 24th, will be set at a later date.

However, the court has postponed the trial date for Jeong Jin Sang, the former chief of political affairs at the Democratic Party leader's office and a co-defendant in the same case, to July 15.

Initially, the court had set the trial dates for May 13 and 27, but after President Lee's side requested a postponement until after the presidential election, the date was rescheduled to the 24th.

The Seoul Central District Court explained that this measure was taken in accordance with Article 84 of the Constitution. Article 84 stipulates that "the President shall not be subject to criminal prosecution during his term of office except for cases of insurrection or treason."

Previously, on June 9, the 7th Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judge Lee Jae Kwon) also announced that the remand trial date for President Lee's Public Official Election Act violation case would be set at a later time.

With the postponement of both the remand trial and the Daejang-dong case proceedings, it is highly likely that the remaining three cases?allegations of perjury instigation, the Ssangbangwool remittance to North Korea, and the corporate credit card misuse case?will also be suspended. Although each court may independently decide whether to halt proceedings, the decisions by these two courts are expected to influence the other cases as well.

The pretrial dates for the corporate credit card misuse case and the North Korea remittance allegations are set for July 1 and July 22, respectively. The appellate trial for the perjury instigation case, which was scheduled for May 20, has also been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
