Jinhwa Jung, mayor of Gwangyang in Jeollanam-do, personally visited major project sites during the first "On-site Communication Day" in June to check on the progress of key initiatives and seek solutions to alleviate citizen inconveniences.

On June 9, Mayor Jung visited, in order, the site for reviewing the expansion and paving of the access road to the Sinwon riverside embankment road and parking lot, the Baekgyesan Millennium Camellia Garden construction site, and the site for the Glocal University 30 Suncheon National University Advanced Materials Gwangyang Campus.

The first site visited, where the expansion and paving of the Sinwon riverside embankment road and parking lot access road are being reviewed, is designated for the "Seomjingang Dredged Soil Sales Revenue Reinvestment Project." Through this project, the city plans to carry out the expansion of the Sinwon riverside culvert bridge to two lanes, the repaving of the embankment road, and the paving of new internal roads.

At the Sinwon riverside culvert bridge, where traffic bottlenecks cause inconvenience for vehicles passing each other, Mayor Jung checked the feasibility of widening the road and reviewed the need for improved vehicle passing convenience as well as the necessity of separating the bicycle path and sidewalk.

The city plans to complete preliminary administrative procedures, such as the detailed design service and river occupation permit, within this year and begin construction next year. Upon completion, the road widening is expected to resolve the bottleneck at the Sinwon riverside culvert bridge, and the paving of the aging embankment road and unpaved roads within the riverside area will greatly enhance safety and driving convenience for road users.

The Baekgyesan Millennium Camellia Garden project aims to create a nature-friendly themed garden in Okryong-myeon, reflecting the geomantic principles of Doseon Guksa. After touring the site, Mayor Jung said, "Please minimize artificial elements and reduce the width of the walking paths to maximize space for tree planting so that citizens and tourists feel as if they are in the forest," and added, "Plant camellia trees with beautiful forms throughout the garden so that visitors can enjoy camellias everywhere."

The last stop was the site for the Glocal University 30 Suncheon National University Advanced Materials Gwangyang Campus, which aims to nurture local, resident-based young talent and specialized professionals in advanced materials.

Currently, the Advanced Materials Gwangyang Campus of Suncheon National University is operating a temporary campus within the Gwangyang Bay Area Knowledge Industry Center. By 2026, the city plans to build the main campus, the "Advanced New Materials Research Center," with a total floor area of 4,574 square meters and three above-ground floors in the Jungdong area. In addition, by 2028, a specialized human resources training center and residential facilities such as dormitories will also be constructed.

Mayor Jung stated, "The process of directly checking sites and solving problems is at the core of urban development," and added, "I will continue to visit major sites frequently, think together with citizens, and do my best to find practical solutions."

Meanwhile, the city continues to operate "On-site Communication Day" every month, during which the mayor personally visits major project sites and areas related to citizens' livelihoods to check on project progress and collect citizen opinions, maintaining a field-oriented approach to administrative communication.
