Cumulative Kelp Purchases Reach Approximately 18,000 Tons
Decision to Continue Mutual Growth with Wando Fishermen
Nongshim announced on June 10 that it participated in the fresh kelp auction held in Geumildo, Wando-gun, South Jeolla Province, and purchased 490 tons of domestically produced kelp to be used in the production of Neoguri ramen. This represents an increase of about 10% compared to the previous year.
A Nongshim representative explained, "This year, the kelp harvest was good, so we increased our purchase volume," adding, "It is a decision aimed at continuing our commitment to mutual growth with the fishermen of the Wando region."
The relationship between Nongshim and Wando began in 1982 with the launch of Neoguri. At that time, Nongshim decided to include large pieces of Wando kelp in its original form to create a differentiated seafood udon flavor. Since then, Nongshim has been purchasing around 400 tons of kelp annually, which is the highest level in the domestic food industry. The cumulative purchase volume has reached approximately 18,000 tons as of this year.
Geumildo in Wando-gun is the largest kelp-producing area in Korea, accounting for about 70% of the nation's kelp production. The region is known for its excellent aquaculture conditions, including abundant sunlight and favorable ocean currents.
In addition to purchasing kelp, Nongshim continues to build a model of mutual growth with the local community by participating in local festivals and operating support programs for fishermen in Wando. These efforts are recognized as a leading example of shared growth between a company and its local community.
Kim Sangmin, executive director of Wando Geumil Fisheries Cooperative, stated, "As Nongshim consistently purchases kelp, Wando fishermen are able to focus more on kelp cultivation, resulting in a virtuous cycle of improved quality." A Nongshim representative added, "Nongshim's purchase of Wando kelp is an important initiative that both supports the local community and creates delicious Neoguri, achieving two goals at once. We will continue to grow together with the public through various activities that contribute to the local community."
