UNESCO World Heritage Program
From Confucian Scholar Robe Experience to Korean Traditional Music Performances
Honoring the Scholarship and Spirit of Haseo Kim Inhu

Jangseong County in South Jeolla Province announced on June 9 that it will host the "Walking with Haseo: Pilam Seowon Scholar Festival" at the UNESCO World Heritage Pilam Seowon area on June 14.

This event is jointly organized by the National Heritage Administration and Jangseong County, and is managed by Gwangju Munhwanaru as part of a public project utilizing world heritage sites. Following the first event in May, this marks the second time it is being held. Pilam Seowon is a Confucian academy dedicated to the Joseon-era scholar Haseo Kim Inhu and is one of Jangseong's most celebrated cultural assets.

The festival will run for about four hours starting at 2:30 p.m. Participants will wear traditional Confucian scholar robes and join the "World Heritage Exploration Experience," touring the main areas of the seowon with guided commentary. There will also be sessions to deepen understanding of the seowon's key historical sites, such as the Hongsalmun Gate, Hamaseok Stone, ginkgo tree, and Hwakhyeonru Pavilion. In addition, at Udongsa Bongshim and Cheongjeoldang, participants can experience scholar culture through activities such as brush and ink practice and making traditional books.

The second part of the event will feature a performance by Kim Sanok, winner of MBN's "Joseon Panstar," and the traditional music band "Ola," who will present a stage blending Korean traditional and contemporary music. This will be followed by a lecture by Song Yongjin (stage name "Song Naegwan"), a historical commentator and actor, on the topic of "The Daily Life and Teachers of Crown Princes in the Joseon Dynasty."

The final part of the festival will offer family-friendly activities such as archery, ink bamboo printing, a scholar's writing contest, traditional tea ceremonies, eco-bag and character badge making, and traditional photography sessions.

Kim Hanjong, the county governor, stated, "This will be a meaningful opportunity to experience the value of the World Heritage Pilam Seowon and the scholarly spirit of Haseo Kim Inhu. I hope many people will come and enjoy Jangseong's cultural assets together."
