Jingwansa Taegukgi Badge Symbolism
Gifted by Speaker Woo Wonsik
President Lee Jaemyung drew attention by appearing at official events for two consecutive days after his inauguration wearing a "torn Taegukgi" badge.
On June 6, President Lee wore this badge while attending the 70th Memorial Day ceremony at the Seoul National Cemetery in Dongjak-gu, Seoul. President Lee also wore the same badge on his left chest when he presided over his first cabinet meeting on June 5.
This badge is modeled after the "Jingwansa Taegukgi," an actual Taegukgi flag used in the independence movement during the Japanese colonial period.
Unlike the typical Taegukgi, this badge features a partially torn upper left corner. The design replicates the Jingwansa Taegukgi, which still bears traces such as the burnt and damaged left corner, believed to be marks from its actual use at sites of anti-Japanese resistance.
Previously, on June 4, Woo Wonsik, Speaker of the National Assembly, presented the Taegukgi badge as a gift and personally pinned it to President Lee's lapel during a luncheon at Sarangjae in the National Assembly to commemorate the presidential inauguration.
Speaker Woo stated on social media, "I presented the Jingwansa Taegukgi badge, which was used during the March 1st Movement, to the President, as I believe now is a crucial time to reaffirm the nation's identity." He also conveyed that President Lee welcomed the gesture, saying, "This Taegukgi is truly meaningful."
