On June 4, Gyeongbuk Province held a meeting with domestic SMR (Small Modular Reactor) anchor companies in the main conference room of Gyeongju City Hall to ensure the successful promotion of the SMR National Industrial Complex.
The meeting was attended by Geumhee Yang, Deputy Governor for Economy of Gyeongbuk Province; Nakyoung Joo, Mayor of Gyeongju; Ikrae Kim, Director of the SMR Center at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP); Kyungwoo Kim, Director at KEPCO KPS; as well as representatives from eight domestic SMR anchor companies. In addition, public institutions in the nuclear sector, including KHNP, KEPCO KPS, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, and the Korea Institute of Materials Science, were present.
This meeting was organized to hear the opinions of nuclear power companies for the successful promotion of the Gyeongju SMR National Industrial Complex. Gyeongbuk Province also presented its policies for fostering the SMR industry, including the ongoing project to establish the SMR Manufacturing Support Center and the founding of the Munmu the Great Science Research Institute.
Going forward, Gyeongbuk Province plans to use today's meeting with SMR anchor companies as an opportunity to expand cooperation with nuclear power anchor companies, including in the development of molten salt reactor technology and the construction of innovative SMRs.
Geumhee Yang, Deputy Governor for Economy of Gyeongbuk Province, stated, "Nuclear power is not a choice but a necessity for securing stable, low-carbon energy. We will do our utmost to ensure the successful establishment of the Gyeongju SMR National Industrial Complex and to attract companies."
