Jusil Village in Ilwol-myeon, Yeongyang-gun, North Gyeongsang Province, is located where the mountain ridges meet.
For this reason, it has been called Jusil (注室) or Jugok (注谷). The wide fields, the mountains surrounding the village, and the traditional atmosphere of the hanok houses revive the forgotten essence of literature.
This is the birthplace of the poet Jo Jihoon, renowned as a member of the Cheongrokpa literary group. At the center of the village stands the Jihoon Literature Museum, which traces the footsteps of the poet.
The Jihoon Literature Museum exhibits materials that allow visitors to reflect on the poet's life, from his boyhood to Korea's liberation and the turbulent modern history, as well as stories about his family. Everyday items such as his writing desk, hat, gloves, and tobacco pipe are also on display, allowing visitors to experience both Jo Jihoon the poet and Jo Jihoon the person.
Jo Jihoon is also well known for his essay "On Integrity" (Jijoron). It is possible that he was influenced by the people of Jusil Village, who, even under the harsh oppression of the Japanese occupation, refused to adopt Japanese names through the policy of Soshi-kaimei.
Jusil Village is also ideal for enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of a summer night, with hanok houses lined along the road and starlight pouring down. The "Hanok Stay" accommodations scattered throughout the village offer a synesthetic experience of both past and present.
County Governor Oh Dochang said, "Jusil Village still preserves various cultural assets such as old houses and seodang (traditional village schools). It is a place where you can feel the spirit of the nation, with sites like the Jihoon Literature Museum, the Poetry Park, and the Poet's Forest. I recommend spending a healing time in Jusil Village this coming summer, counting the stars and enjoying the scent of wood in a hanok."
Guided tours of the Jihoon Literature Museum must be booked in advance and inquiries can be made by phone.
